Beautiful Private Accommodation

Bowden Wood is strategically tucked away amidst green fields and hedgerows, creating an atmosphere of solitude and serenity that belies its proximity to local points of interest. The daily hustle and bustle feels a world away. The gorgeous beach of Blackpool Sands is within a comfortable 20-minute walk, and the nearest charming town is only a 10-minute drive away.

Each morning at Bowden Wood presents an opportunity to connect with nature, as the sun rises over rolling hills and bathes the lodge in a gentle glow. The surrounding countryside unfurls in all directions, offering a scenic backdrop for a relaxing breakfast or a refreshing cup of coffee.

Peaceful countryside retreat

The impressive grounds of Bowden Wood are a delight, bursting with vibrant flowers, trees, and greenery. The air is filled with the delicate perfume of blossoms, setting the scene for outdoor relaxation. The generous outdoor area is furnished with a BBQ, picnic table, and a lounging area.

The porch and decking area, provide the perfect platform to enjoy the panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside. Both spaces invite you to unwind, whether by sipping on your morning coffee or just lounging in the sunshine.

Beautiful interiors

Bowden Wood is not just about its stunning exteriors and captivating views. The house boasts two large bedrooms: a master with an ensuite and a twin room. Both bedrooms offer ample storage space, ensuring the lodge can truly be a home away from home for your stay.

With an aesthetic that marries English countryside charm with a touch of Japanese elegance, the lodge’s interiors create a serene ambiance. The host’s previous life in Japan subtly influences the decor, with artefacts and design elements speaking of a well-travelled life.

Light pours in through the numerous windows, illuminating the spacious living area, where comfortable sofas and a discreet study area await. This is a space where one can sink into relaxation, catch up on reading, or – if you must – handle urgent emails with stunning views.

Places to stay if you’re travelling as a group

For larger groups seeking a holiday, the host offers a lovely, alternative accommodation called Bowden Croft, located right next to Bowden Wood. This traditional Georgian terrace is attached to the main manor house, yet it retains a distinct personality with its private entrance and dedicated amenities.

Bowden Croft, much like its neighbour, captivates guests with its blend of English charm and modern comforts. As you enter, you are welcomed by a delightful garden room, with double doors leading onto a sun terrace. This becomes the ideal spot for enjoying an afternoon read or a heart-warming cup of tea.

With both Bowden Wood and Bowden Croft available, you can have a fun holiday with your group and still have your own private spaces. These sister properties, with their shared charm, exclusive privacy, and convenience of location, present an unmatched vacationing spot in the beautiful setting of South Devon.

Activities in the Surrounding Area

Although Bowden Wood offers ample charm to keep guests entertained, the surrounding area is filled with opportunities for exploration and fun. As I have mentioned earlier, the beautiful Blackpool Sands beach is just a short walk through the leafy country roads.

A short drive away, you’ll find the vibrant town of Dartmouth. Steeped in naval history and boasting an array of delightful dining options, Dartmouth offers activities like paddleboarding, sailing, and ferry rides. A key attraction here is the Dartmouth Castle, perched majestically on the SW Coast Path and offering panoramic views akin to those we’ve only ever seen in Abel Tasman, in New Zealand.

For nature enthusiasts, I recommend a visit to the Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve. The reserve is home to Slapton Sands, a serene beach, perfect for a sunset walk. Another recommended adventure is a drive to the Start Point Lighthouse, marking the beginning of a captivating coastal hike to Prawle Point. Don’t miss Mattiscombe Sands, a surreal, secluded beach flanked by towering cliffs and rock formations.

Despite the myriad of available activities, I encourage you to indulge in simple relaxation within the grounds of Bowden Wood. Whether it’s sipping a glass of wine on the deck or enjoying a book on the lush lawn, Bowden Wood provides the perfect environment for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Bowden Wood is the right blend of luxury, seclusion, and location. It’s a dreamy countryside sanctuary that consistently delivers an idyllic holiday experience. Whether you’re searching for a regular holiday home in the UK or just exploring Devon for the first time, Bowden Wood is an irresistible choice and our recommended place to stay in Devon.
