Where to stay in Seville Summary

Where to stay in Seville

Seville became a lot more popular in the last few years, hence there has been an explosion in new accommodation. You’d find so many luxury hotels and hippie hostels dotted all around the city. Seville is a walkable city, so you will never be too far away from any interesting attractions. We never took the public transport in Seville. We walked everywhere and loved its architecture, gardens, and riverside. It’s important to understand that Seville gets extremely hot during summer. Rainfall is not abundant and late Autumn, early Spring are the best times to visit.

Seville has distinct areas called barrios. Here is where to stay in Seville, with pros and cons for each district. Our favourite place in Seville is Santa Cruz, given its history and incredibly beautiful interior gardens.

The Best Places To Stay In Seville

Where to Stay in Seville Neighbourhood Map

Casco Antiguo (Old Town)

Seville is divided into numerous districts that are made up of smaller neighbourhoods, each with their own unique charm and character. One of the most iconic and historically rich districts is the Casco Antiguo, which translates to the “Old Town” in English.

The Casco Antiguo is home to some of the most famous landmarks and attractions in Seville, including the breathtaking Cathedral of Seville, the stunning Alcázar of Seville, and the charming Plaza de España. Within the Casco Antiguo, there are four distinct and well-known neighbourhoods that each offer something special to visitors.

  • Santa Cruz, known for its narrow, winding streets and charming plazas. This neighbourhood is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the true essence of Seville’s old-world charm and architecture.
  • Seville Centre, the beating heart of the city and a hub for shopping, dining, and entertainment. This lovely neighbourhood is home to some of Seville’s popular attractions, including the Metropol Parasol, a stunning wooden structure that offers panoramic views of the city.
  • El Arenal, located on the banks of the Guadalquivir River and is famous for its bullring and riverfront promenade. This neighbourhood is perfect for anyone looking to take a leisurely stroll and soak up the sun while enjoying stunning views of the river.
  • Alameda, known for its bohemian vibe, trendy cafés, and colourful street art. This neighbourhood is a popular spot for a fun night out, and is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience Seville’s more alternative side.

Let’s take a closer look at each neighbourhood, so you can get a better idea why stay in that area on your next visit to Seville.

Santa Cruz

  • Santa Cruz is the most picturesque neighbourhood in Seville
  • Part of Casco Antiguo (Old Town) district
  • Key attractions include the Cathedral, Giralda, Alcázar, and Hospital of the Venerables
  • Santa Cruz is an ideal place to stay for first time visitors
  • Many restaurants, tapas bars, and shopping opportunities
  • Santa Cruz can be touristy and expensive
  • Very walkable, with a lively atmosphere after sunset
  • Very safe, even at night.

This is definitely the first neighbourhood tourists visit, and for a good reason. It is, in our opinion, the most picturesque part of Seville with narrow winding streets, interior gardens, and whitewashed houses. Santa Cruz is known for its centuries-old gardens, and it was formerly the Jewish quarter. The cobbled lanes are dotted with orange trees and when we visited Seville for the first time, at the end of March, the whole neighbourhood smelled like sweet orange blossoms. It was because of this memory that we fell in love with Seville and decided to move there.

The main sights are Cathedral and Giralda, formerly a mosque’s tower, the Alcázar which we think is the most beautiful place in the world and the baroque Hospital of the Venerables, a house with a fine collection of art.

Why stay in Santa Cruz?

This area of Seville is an ideal place to stay due to its convenient location and proximity to all the popular attractions.

Santa Cruz is the most beautiful neighbourhood in Seville. We loved it so much, especially during those lazy Spring evenings. This is where we found the most interesting restaurants and tapas bars, we fell in love with Seville’s architecture and got to mingle with locals and tourists alike. There is something truly extraordinary about this part of Seville as if it will charm you with all its colours, history, and sights.

Santa Cruz can get a little touristy, especially during peak season. Because of this, prices can be a little unfriendly. If you happen to stay in a street facing room, you might experience a loud night full of fiestas. However, we think Santa Cruz is so incredible, it’s definitely worth considering it as a base for your Seville visit.

The neighbourhood retains a traditional Andalusian character, Santa Cruz is located in the heart of Seville, which makes it a convenient base for exploring the city. There are plenty of shopping opportunities, you will find numerous boutiques, artisan workshops, and souvenir shops. It’s the ideal place to find unique gifts, souvenirs and local crafts.

Santa Cruz is very walkable, you won’t need a car. It’s also a very safe area, even at night. The streets are lively after sunset, especially in the summer, when temperatures finally become comfortable.

If you are planning on doing some shopping, you will love the area located between Plaza de Encarnacion and Plaza Nueva. We found so many excellent shops here with quality crafts and traditional embroideries. During weekdays, the streets are a lot quieter than during weekends, when the streets are literally packed with tourists and locals alike.

After shopping, we recommend heading south of the retail heaven to see the Ayuntamiento, the Town Hall, the Cathedral, Archive of the Indies, and the beautiful Alcázar.

Why stay in Seville Centre?

Seville Centre is one of the best places to stay in Seville for first-time tourists and travellers.

It’s a vibrant area with many shops, restaurants, bars and beautiful attractions. Seville Centre, part of the Casco Antiguo district, will get busy, especially during the peak season. It’s nice to be close to everything, but weekends can get loud and crowded.

Staying in the city centre also means easy access to Seville’s theatres, museums, and galleries, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the city’s rich cultural scene. Theatres usually perform during the autumn and winter months. We recommend checking out the Teatro Lope de Vega theatre, which hosts a wide range of plays, musicals, and dance performances, and the Teatro Central, which is known for its contemporary productions.

Because of its proximity to so many interesting attractions, prices in this area are a generally higher. The available accommodations are mostly mid-range or high-end.

  • Romantic neighbourhood with a great location

El Arenal was home to the city’s port, where ships used to sail to the “New World”. One of the main attractions in Arenal is the bullring, the Moorish Torre del Oro, the Maestranza theatre, and the Hospital de Caridad known for its macabre paintings.

Arenal is a great neighbourhood for those interested in learning more about Seville’s rich naval and military past. Many adventurers and sailors set off from Seville’s port to seek their own fortune in the Americas.

As Arenal is situated along the banks of the Guadalquivir River, it’s the perfect place for riverside walks and to enjoy outdoor activities such as cycling or boat tours.

We found that Arenal has a vibrant, youthful atmosphere, with a lively bars and restaurants. There are many traditional tapas bars, but also modern fusion cuisine.

Why stay in Arenal?

Arenal is a romantic neighbourhood with a great location in the heart of the city, making it an excellent choice to stay during your visit to Seville.

Arenal is a beautiful neighbourhood which has a touch of romance to it. We loved walking by the canal hand in hand, admiring the lush vegetation and the quirky Spanish houses on each side. Arenal is close to Santa Cruz and other central locations, so pretty much everything is walking distance. For a romantic evening, take your partner and walk along the river all the way to Plaza de España just in time for sunset pictures.

Because of its key location, Arenal is expensive. You won’t find many budget options in this area, hence this is better suited for luxury travellers. It is a great location for couples looking for evening walks and beautiful vanilla sky-views.

There are some shops around, but for the good shopping streets, expect to walk about 10-15 mins towards the centre.

Arenal is very walkable, and is a very safe area, even at night. The streets and the river walk gets busier after sunset, especially in the summer, when temperatures finally become comfortable.

  • Many hip bars, restaurants, and galleries
  • Hosts concerts, festivals, and markets throughout the year
  • Offers budget-friendly accommodations
  • Most attractions are within walking distance
  • The area is generally safe

Alameda is the place to stay if you want to experience the explosive nightlife of Seville.

A decade ago, Alameda was considered home to sordid inhabitants. Here it is, ten years late, gentrified and fully transformed with many hip and trendy bars, vegetarian restaurants and cool galleries. We found an array of great fusion restaurants here, as well as awesome yoga studios. This district is now popular with young professionals and families.

Alameda de Hércules is a spacious, tree-lined promenade in the middle of Alameda. It is popular for both locals and tourists, how frequent it’s many outdoor cafés and restaurants. The promenade is lined with large trees on either side, providing plenty of shade during the hot summer days.

The square has a rich history, it was originally built in the late 16th century as a public garden and became a popular spot for social gatherings and cultural events. Today, it continues to be a vibrant gathering place, hosting concerts, festivals, and markets throughout the year.

Alameda is the city’s gay neighbourhood, where you can find many bars and clubs catering to LGBTQ+ people and their allies. The area is known for its inclusive atmosphere, lively nightlife, and welcoming locals.

Seville also hosts an annual LGBTQ+ Pride Parade, which is one of the largest and most festive events in the city. The parade features colourful floats, music, and dancing, and attracts a diverse crowd of people from all over the world.

Why stay in Alameda?

Alameda is a great place for those interested in trying an alternative Seville. This is brilliant for party people and younger travellers looking for cool bars and great restaurants. It’s located just further away from the tourist attractions, which makes it cheaper than other key areas in Seville. Although changed, Alameda still managed to preserve a bit of its louche past.

If you want to be in the centre of Seville, this area might feel a little out of the way. That said, nothing is really too far in Seville. The Royal Alcázar of Seville is about 15-20 mins walk from Alameda.

Alameda is definitely the place to stay for those interested in partying rather than the historical and touristy Seville.

You will find budget friendly accommodation in Alameda, even the 4-star hotels are very affordable. Hostels are becoming less common in Seville, you will find them closer to the centre of the city.

The food scene is extensive, you will find everything from traditional tapas bars to international cuisine. The food is generally good, and you will have plenty of opportunities to try Andalusian dishes.

Alameda is a safe area, however, as with any busy places, be mindful of your surroundings at night.

Triana

  • Best place to stay in Seville for families with kids
  • Centro Ceramica Triana – azulejos ceramic tiles museum
  • Triana has a deep connection to flamenco
  • Mercado de Triana – a local market selling fresh produce and local products
  • Castillo de San Jorge is a medieval castle museum located next to the market
  • Staying in Triana provides access to central areas, most attractions a 20-30 min walk
  • Triana has lovely restaurants and bars, with most clustered around the market
  • Accommodations in Triana are budget-friendly and family-friendly
  • Safety is good, public transport via subway

Triana is known to have a strong identity, and sometimes locals refer to it as the “Independent Republic of Triana”. We visited this part primarily for the azulejos, ceramic titles with intricate, colourful designs, made using mud from the river bank. The main attraction, the Centro Ceramica Triana is a museum dedicated to the history and craftsmanship of Triana’s ceramic industry.

Triana has a rich past which continues to be celebrated today. We found many interesting narrow streets, which are less visited by tourists. Triana is very laid back, so we recommend Triana for those travellers who wish to experience the city like a local. As Triana is on the western side of the river, the main attractions are approximately like 20-30 minutes away on foot. But with such splendid views of the river bridges, who minds meandering around beautiful Seville?

Triana has a deep connection to flamenco, a traditional Spanish art that combines singing, dancing, and guitar. Many famous flamenco artists were born or have lived in Triana. You can catch a flamenco show at one of the local “tablaos” (flamenco theatres) or even take a flamenco class during your visit.

Mercado de Triana, a local market, is located at the base of the Puente de Triana bridge. Explore the variety of stalls selling fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and other local products. It’s also an excellent spot to grab a bite to eat at one of the tapas bars located inside.

Right next door to the market, the ruins of Castillo de San Jorge, a medieval castle museum, once the seat of the Spanish Inquisition, provides insight into the darker side of Seville’s history.

The neighbourhood of Los Remedios is located within Triana. This area is well-known for its beautiful tree-lined streets, delightful squares (Plaza de Cuba), and impressive architecture. On Calle Asunción, you will find a variety of high-end interior stores and fashion boutiques.

Why stay in Triana?

Triana is the best place to stay in Seville for families with kids

Staying in Triana gives you access to the centre areas, but be prepared to walk 20-30 minutes to most attractions. Cross the Puente de San Telmo for the Royal Alcázar and the Jardines del Prado de San Sebastián. Walk across the Puente de Triana bridge for the Catedral de Sevilla and other central sights.

Alternatively, take the subway from Plaza de Cuba station just one stop to Puerta Jerez station to be in the old town area.

We found some lovely restaurants and bars here, they are mostly clustered around the market. For breakfast, pick up some warm pastry from the bakeries and grab a coffee from the many cafés along the river. In terms of night-life, don’t expect much. However, the venues along the river stay open until late and in the summer there is live music.

Most accommodations and hotels are along the river bank, a short walk away from either bridges. Prices vary, it will be easier to find budget friendly places in Triana, than in the more central areas.

There are a lot more family friendly hotels here with larger rooms and a bit more space than in other parts of the city. Príncipes Park has a large green area with fountains and playgrounds.

Safety is very good, no issues at night, but note, that Triana is a more residential area, some streets get very quiet after sunset.

  • Nervión Plaza, a large shopping centre
  • Close to Santa Justa train station
  • Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium for sports enthusiasts
  • Jardines de la Buhaira park offers green space and a playground for kids
  • More affordable and family-friendly accommodations
  • 20-30 minute walk to major tourist attractions
  • Dining options lean toward modern and international cuisine
  • Safe and family-friendly neighbourhood

Nervión is a centrally located neighbourhood with a unique blend of history, modernity, and local charm.

Home to the Nervión Plaza, the largest and most popular shopping centre in the city. We have found a wide range of international brands such as Zara, H&M, and Apple, as well as local boutiques and speciality shops. In addition to shopping, you can catch a move in the cinema complex or grab a bit at the many restaurants and small cafés.

Nervión is close to the Santa Justa train station, which is great if you plan to take day trips to other cities in Andalusia or travel further within Spain.

Just behind the plaza, the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium is home to Sevilla FC, one of the city’s two major football teams. It’s an excellent spot for sports fans to catch a match or take a stadium tour.

The lovely Jardines de la Buhaira park is a perfect spot to enjoy an ice cream. The park has a small playground for kids.

Why stay in Nervión?

The hotels in Nervión are generally cheaper than in the central areas. Rooms are larger and family friendly. However, there aren’t as many places as in Triana.

While centrally located, you will have to walk 20-30 mins to see the important tourist attractions. Keep this in mind, especially if you are visiting during the summer, when the temperatures can be very high.

The main part of Nervión, around the plaza, is fairly commercial. The dining options in this area tend to be more modern and diverse, featuring more burger joints and international cuisine rather than traditional tapas bars and Andalusian eateries.

Nervión is a safe and family-friendly neighbourhood, which can be an important factor when choosing where to stay in Seville.

Macarena

Macarena used to be a very poor area in Seville, but now it’s a residential neighbourhood that has been revitalized. The areas closest to Seville Centre have some lovely street with beautifully restored mansions, but the rest of the neighbourhood is mostly made up of large residential apartment blocks.

Despite some articles that may claim otherwise, Macarena is not a suitable place for tourists to stay. There are very few hotels or apartments, and it is located about a 30-minute walk away from the main tourist attractions.

Why avoid Macarena?

It’s best to avoid staying in Macarena since it’s primarily a residential area with limited accommodations, despite its proximity to Alameda.

Contrary to what some articles may say, there are no budget accommodation in Macarena. While you can access some sights via public transport like bus 13, it’s still far from the city centre.

I would recommend looking for a place to stay in Seville’s Santa Cruz or El Arenal neighbourhoods.

  1. Hi,

I’m travelling in the first week of September and actually proposing to my girlfriend and wanted to know the romantic and quieter side to stay in Seville. We enjoy walking and don’t mind visiting the busy parts but would like a quieter place to stay in. Would you suggest Arenal?

    Regards and good health

    Rakesh

    1. Hi Rakesh,

Arenal is a good option. Just make sure you select a more exclusive hotel which is positioned in a quiet part or has the rooms which look out in the inner courtyards.
      Enjoy Seville!

      Kind Regards,

      Cory

  2. Hi there! Your post is getting me excited to go! I am looking to stay for 1-2 months. Obviously, prices rack up when you’re looking on many sites. I was wondering how you found a place for 6 mos and if you had any suggestions.☺️ thanks so much!!
