The city is divided into two main areas by the Naka River: Hakata and Tenjin. Hakata is the historical heart of the city and one of the best places to enjoy local food. The yatai food stalls are a particular attraction in Fukuoka.
The city is well known for being the birthplace of Ichiran, the mega popular ramen chain who created the incredible rich Hakata pork broth.
The climate is generally mild, with hot, humid summers and cool winters. Fukuoka hosts several festivals throughout the year, such as the Hakata Gion Yamakasa in July, and Dontaku Port Festival in May.
