Short biography about yourself and your blog
I’m Jurga, a founder of Full Suitcase family travel blog. Full Suitcase is a travel blog for families who want to discover the world beyond the theme parks and beach destinations. We want to inspire others to show their kids the world.
How did you start off in your career as a blogger?
It was a spontaneous decision when researching information for one of our trips. I realised that there is so little quality information for family travel to off the beaten path destinations and decided to start sharing our travel experiences hoping to help others in a search for similar information.
What is the best way of establishing yourself if you're just starting out in your career as a blogger?
I find that the best - not the quickest - way to establish yourself is to provide high-quality content. It’s also important to connect with other bloggers, I didn’t realise this in the beginning.
Can you tell me some of your strengths that really helped you in blogging?
My two biggest strengths are high-quality content and beautiful images.
I am writing about our experiences and provide lots of practical tips for every destination I cover. My readers appreciate this. My other strength is photography. Visual content is extremely important!
Did you have any professional help or did you created the blog yourself?
I did it all by myself, although I have to admit that I seriously underestimated what it means. It took an incredible amount of time and effort to start a blog without any previous experience.
I find it extremely rewarding to know the technical side of my website and not having to depend on somebody else for making every single change to my website.
What tips would you give to a new blogger?
Don’t start if you are not passionate about your subject. Don’t start if you hope to get rich overnight. Take a blogging course from an experienced blogger and hire professional help for the technical side if it’s too overwhelming for you.
What are the most common mistakes that bloggers make in their copy?
I find that many bloggers sacrifice on quality. Try to imagine who your ideal reader is before you even start writing. Consider what they expect to learn from you and start from there.
Do you believe bloggers should also have the ability to provide photographs?
Absolutely, yes. Beautiful imagery is extremely important for any blog, and especially for a travel blog. Take a photography course, invest in a better camera, and post only the best quality pictures on your blog. If you can’t provide beautiful photos yourself, consider purchasing royalty free stock images for your blog.
A lot of people think that blogging is an easy way to make money online. Do you have some tips for those people who are interested in making money from the blog?
There is no easy way to make money anywhere. Blogging is hard work and it will not get you rich and famous overnight. Can you do it? Yes. But be prepared to work hard.
What do you think is the best social media strategy for getting more visitors to a blog?
Write shocking content, provoke and it will get noticed on social media. It’s not for everyone, though. Not for me, in any case.
What constitutes good writing?
It might mean many different things to different people. To me, it’s either an engaging storytelling or an informative article. Lucky few are able to combine the two.
What constitutes bad writing?
Articles with no engaging story and no useful information always leave me wondering why people even waste their time.
What are the rewards of blogging as a career?
Blogging is very rewarding if you love what you do. But so are all the other jobs.
Are there any downsides of being a blogger?
The biggest downside of being a blogger is that you have no free time anymore. You’re always working. Researching, blogging and social media might burn you out.
